Effects of terpineol on the compound action potential of the rat sciatic nerve BJMBR
Moreira,M.R.; Cruz,G.M.P.; Lopes,M.S.; Albuquerque,A.A.C.; Leal-Cardoso,J.H..
Terpineol, a volatile terpenoid alcohol of low toxicity, is widely used in the perfumery industry. It is an important chemical constituent of the essential oil of many plants with widespread applications in folk medicine and in aromatherapy. The effects of terpineol on the compound action potential (CAP) of rat sciatic nerve were studied. Terpineol induced a dose-dependent blockade of the CAP. At 100 µM, terpineol had no demonstrable effect. At 300 µM terpineol, peak-to-peak amplitude and conduction velocity of CAP were significantly reduced at the end of 180-min exposure of the nerve to the drug, from 3.28 ± 0.22 mV and 33.5 ± 7.05 m/s, respectively, to 1.91 ± 0.51 mV and 26.2 ± 4.55 m/s. At 600 µM, terpineol significantly reduced peak-to-peak amplitude...

Torch ginger Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith is a tropical herb-like, rhizome-like and perennial plant that possesses inflorescences that are both pretty and showy at different colour shades, and have a great visual appeal. Producing seedlings at a high enough level when done conventionally by the division of tussocks, has high costs and phytosanitary problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the induction of somatic embryogenesis and its potential for subsequent plant regeneration in torch ginger. Rhizomes, leaves and roots from the seedlings grown in vitro were used as explant segments. The different explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose, and it was solidified with 5.5 g L-1 of agar. The effect of 2.4-D...

Histological analysis of the callogenesis and organogenesis from root segments of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe BABT
Mello,Marcia O.; Melo,Murilo; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz.
Callus was induced from root segments taken from in vitro grown plants of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe. The explants were cultured on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 13.4muM of alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid and 2.2muM of 6-benzylaminopurine at 25ºC in the dark. Histological analysis revealed that callus was formed from the hypertrophied cortical parenchyma cells of the explant. Some of these cells underwent division while the surrounding cells accumulated starch. Callus was capable of shoot bud regeneration after 70 days when it was transfered to liquid medium of the same composition. After 30 days in liquid medium, buds developed from nodular structures. The adventitious shoots developed extensive root systems when they were placed...

Padrão de vascularização do rizoma de gengibre (Zingiber Officinale R) BABT
Santos,Gedir de Oliveira; Silva,Eldo A. Monteiro da.
The vascular system in the rhizome of ginger (Zingiber officinale R.) is arranged in three distinct systems: an inner system that form the principal vascular system of the rhizome, an intermediated system originating a thin camada of anastomosing vascular strands, having direct contact with the inner system and an outer system free of the anastomosis with the another vascular systems. The intermediated and inner system are associated with the root insertion and whole systems are relacioned with the formation of bud adventicious maintaing the same pattern of the rhizome and the communication between the outer and inner system occurs through the bridging to inner system leaf traces.
